Williamsburg Firm Charged $60,000 for Asbestos Dump

Newport News, Virginia - A subcontractor dumped asbestos containing debris from the new $14 million Navy housing construction site on 31st Street and Washington Avenue in downtown Newport News at a landfill in Suffolk. State officials confirmed that the subcontractor claimed it was regular soil fill.
Milt Johnston, waste compliance manager at the state Department of Environmental Quality said DEQ officials, who took 18 samples of the approximately 20 truckloads that were dumped, will most likely not fine the Williamsburg contractor, Cinter Construction Company, Inc.
The company, however, will have to pay the price difference between clean and asbestos-contaminated waste to the landfill, which according to the owner of the landfill, John Holland with cost about $60,000.
Johnston said the debris was mischaracterized by Cinter who did not correctly identify the debris. The charge from Holland for asbestos-laden debris is about $60 per ton versus $130 per truckload for regular debris.
